About

Designer and visual artist Iván Castillo Lagrange has raised an inquiry based on modular structures, folds changing directions and generating volume, which vary depending on the light and according to the mental behavior of the observer. Everything emerges from the plane, then acquires structure to finally fold synergetically all at once. Starting from this premise, his ideas for sculptures, objects, installations and murals incorporate the notions of finding balanced tensions, not only as compositional resources but as speculative triggers.  From the perceptual point of view, these works can be seen as “increased micro particles” and also as “reduced macrostructures”. In any case, its uniqueness lies in its ambivalence, derived from its flat and volumetric, rigid and expandable condition. Each form serves as support for the other, generating a progressive, bi-rombic structure, based on reflections on duality.   “A plane does not hold without its counterpart, just as the constant tension that exists between two directions affects all its relations,” Castillo Lagrange writes in his statement.  For the artist, the perceptual question drifts towards a philosophical dimension, since each element complements the other and each fold implies the split in two, one outgoing and the other in fuge. In art as in life, everything implies its opposite; you just have to discern the point of view from which you look and presume what is in the dim light or out of our eyes.

Architecture of Silence

Beyond all the noise generated by our individual and collective neuroses, there is in all of us a space for silence in which our fundamental being dwells.

It is in this simultaneous dimension where senses are yet to be awakened, a realm feared by the thinking mind or ego. It is there where life is renewed and creativity continues to rain incessantly. This constant mystical present moment is the door that allows us to access the pre-invisible where form and condition gestate, that quantum field of energy. This is where we invest ourselves to explore mysteries of our wonderful and complicated dual universe.

The main motivation of this stage of my artistic expression has two fundamental axes: one personal and one collective. I look to inhabit space through a creative process where ideas are the axis of process, using universal symbols, proportions in conversation with materials with active molecules. Systems to structure to create spaces to calm the mind and lower the volume of the internal noise that keeps us from fully living the pure experience of the present moment.

From a collective perspective, we look for the observer to have a direct experience of the space towards that inner silence through tools such as the golden ratio, light frequency, active gravity, slow curvature; are some key pillars to harmonize and reflect on. The value of the pieces lies not only in their aesthetic dimension, but in their ability to harmonize and generate an experience of personal, subjective and free openness. This manifestation of the phenomenology of the process favors the synthesis and expresses from the essential the connection with the primary of the form, with the principles where the nature of the physical is gestated.
